All is Bright - A Yorkshire
Lad's Christmas
Ee, the Language!
This book could likely fall into the hands of people who are not from
Yorkshire, (or England for that matter) who might not know what we’re
on about. This should help:
‘appen - perhaps, maybe
Anorl - also, as well
Bard - abide or bear
Beano Annual - hardcover comic book
Breeze block - concrete building block
Capped - well pleased with yourself
Chuntering - grumbling, complaining
Dandelion & burdock - a dark brown soft drink
Five bob - five shillings (25 pence)
Gawp - dim person
Gormless - dim, slow on the uptake
Hankie - handkerchief
Hoss-belly deep- deep as a horse’s belly
Jerry - chamber pot
Let off - break wind
Nowt - nothing
Pinny - apron
Plothery - muddy, all mucked up
Pork growler - pork pie
Rum - strange, as in “Rum ‘un”, a strange thing
Scottish fortnight - a two-week summer holiday in Scotland
Sike - such like
Sissy - prissy, effeminate
Slape - slippery
Slap ‘ole - a slop hole, muddy puddle
Summat - something
Tanner - a coin worth six Old Pence
Taties - potatoes
The pools - gambling on football results
Threepenny bit - a coin worth three Old Pence
Wellies - rubber or Wellington boots, or gumboots
Yersen - yourself
And the Yorkshire Christmas recipes
in the book are delicious! (and easy to follow)
